What Is a Fossil?
A fossil is preserved evidence of a living thing from long ago. Some fossils are body parts, such as shells, bones, or teeth. Other fossils are traces, such as footprints, burrows, or leaf impressions. Fossils usually form when an organism or its trace is quickly covered by mud, sand, or ash. Over a very long time, the sediment may harden into rock and preserve the evidence. For example, a shell buried in soft seafloor mud can leave its shape in rock. Fossils do not tell us every detail about the past, but they provide useful clues. Scientists carefully record where each fossil is found because fossils from the same rock layer may give evidence about the same ancient environment.

Observe the Fossil Clues
Scientists begin by making careful observations. An observation describes what can be seen or measured, not what someone guesses. Imagine that scientists examine one rock layer at Canyon Rock Site.
