Overview

A number line lets us see fractions as distances between whole numbers, making comparisons easy.

A number line from zero to one shows one-half and three-fourths at their correct locations.

Key Ideas

To compare 3/4 and 2/3, find a common denominator (12): 9/12 and 8/12. The bigger numerator wins. On a number line, the fraction further right is larger.

A number line shows 8/12, or 2/3, to the left of 9/12, or 3/4.
