Listen to Everyday Sound Signals

A sound signal is a sound that tells people something. You may hear sound signals every day. A school bell can mean that it is time to begin class. A timer beep can mean that time is up. A bicycle bell can tell people that a bicycle is nearby. Listen carefully to each sound. Notice whether it is loud or soft, long or short, and repeated or made only once. The sound must have a meaning that people understand. For example, your teacher might clap twice to ask the class to become quiet. Everyone can help by listening, remembering the meaning, and following the signal. Talk with a partner about a sound signal you have heard and the message it carried.

Match Sounds to Messages

Different sound patterns can stand for different messages. A pattern is an order of sounds. One clap might mean “look at me.” Two claps might mean “come here.” Three claps might mean “help, please.” The listener must know what each pattern means before the signals are used. Work with a partner to match sound cards to message cards. One partner makes a sound pattern, and the other partner chooses its message. Then switch roles so both partners get to send and receive. Listen for the number of sounds and the pauses between them. For example, clap, pause, clap is different from two quick claps. Take turns speaking and listening as you explain why a sound matches a message.

Create a Sound Code

A code is a set of signals with agreed meanings. With your group, choose a sound maker, such as hands, rhythm sticks, a desk tap, or a small bell. Create three easy sound patterns. Give each pattern a simple message. For example, one bell ring could mean “start,” two bell rings could mean “stop,” and three bell rings could mean “come back.” Draw or write the code on a chart so everyone can remember it. Choose group roles, such as sound maker, listener, code keeper, and safety checker. The safety checker makes sure sounds are not too loud and materials are used correctly. Community members also divide responsibilities when they work on a common task. Let every group member share an idea before choosing the final code.

Send a Message Across the Room

Now use your code to communicate across the classroom. Place the sender on one side of the room and the receiver on the other side. Other group members can observe and record what happens. The teacher gives the sender a message card, such as “stop.” The sender makes the matching sound pattern without speaking or showing the card. The receiver listens, uses the code chart, and says the message. For example, if two taps mean “stop,” the sender makes two clear taps. The receiver should identify “stop.” Try several messages, and then change roles. Make sounds only when the teacher says the room is ready. One group should send at a time so other sounds do not cover the signal. Everyone has a responsibility that helps the class complete the task.

Test and Improve the Code

A good sound code should be easy to make, hear, and understand. Test each pattern several times. After every signal, record whether the receiver understood the correct message. If a pattern is confusing, ask why. Two patterns may sound too much alike. The sound may be too soft, or the room may be noisy. Improve the code by changing the number of sounds, adding a clear pause, or choosing a sound maker that can be heard safely. For example, change one tap and two taps into one long ring and three short rings. Test the improved code again from the same distance. Compare the results. Group members should listen to one another, agree on useful changes, and carry out their roles. Improvement means using test results to make the communication device work better.
